    Compatible Laptops

    Hi Everyone,

My question this time is about Laptops, where can I find out which Laptops are compatible with Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS). I know there is a lot of Laptops out there for sale, so lets only look at the: Hp, Dell, Mitsubishi, Compaq, and E machines. So which cheap models of these brands is compatible with Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) ?

    Thanks Larry

Compaq is just an HP brand (since 2003). But HP has horrible customer support. These days even buying a care pack doesn't mean you'll be able to talk to someone who couldn't be easily replaced by a robot.

I'd recommend Dell. (And Toshiba even though it's not your list. I bought a rather cheap Toshiba P105 back in 2007 and it still serves me well. Just needs keyboard replacement because my cats jumped on it too much. :)

Most laptops will work without problems, but you may want to pay attention to the video card and the wifi. People often have bad experiences with ATI video cards, as ATI doesn't always provide proprietary drivers. Nvidia does, for Intel good open source drivers are available. Broadcom wifi can give trouble because of lack of drivers too.

    Hi,

I have had very good luck with several Asus laptops. No issues at all. As Impavidus says, most name brands should work with little to no problems.

    Re: Compatible Laptops

I'M using a Dell 1564 that works perfectly with Ubuntu 12.04 lts.

    so I would recommend Dell.

That being said there are quite a few out there that will work.
have had pretty good luck with anything not ATI graphics though.

    Re: Compatible Laptops

One problem you're going to run into today is that most new laptops come with Windows 8 and use UEFI -- which presents more difficulties in installing Ubuntu than does the more traditional MBR approach.

Also, many laptops also come with Hybrid graphics (two different video chipsets) which also pose difficulty in Linux.

So, if you can get a laptop running Win7 and NOT having hybrid graphics, you will encounter less compatibility problems.

I have a laptop that I like made by ZaReason. They sell their machines with Ubuntu pre-installed.
