One problem you're going to run into today is that most new laptops come with Windows 8 and use UEFI -- which presents more difficulties in installing Ubuntu than does the more traditional MBR approach.
Also, many laptops also come with Hybrid graphics (two different video chipsets) which also pose difficulty in Linux.
So, if you can get a laptop running Win7 and NOT having hybrid graphics, you will encounter less compatibility problems.
